I thought I saw a puddy tat interview a wise man about national drug policy. I blinked. I blinked again. Yep, puddy tat. Nobody can question the creativity and tenacity of the media and the American public generally for their role in pushing marijuana legalization to the forefront of our political agenda in California with Prop 19, the initiative to regulate, tax and control cannabis in 2010. The war on drugs puts budget pressure on our state and federal governments because of the high cost of law enforcement, the courts, and especially prison. Is now the time to mention that prison may be the worst place to try to “rehabilitate” a drug addict? Considering the availability of drugs in prison alone makes the drug war look like a tragically laughable farce. Enjoy this marijuana video.

NPR explores the myth that prohibition of a drug affects overall drug use. Drug use in Holland and Portugal is less than that of the United States, despite policies of decriminalization or legalization of drugs having been in effect for years by now. Take away the forbidden nature of the fruit and the fruit becomes boring, ordinary, not worth getting excited about. We cannot form a healthy relationship with things which are forbidden yet useful and widely available black market elevated prices. Market forces will not let our society begin to heal until we regulate, control and tax cannabis.
