California Medical Assn. Calls For Legalization of Marijuana

Posted by Ty on October 17th, 2011

When the doctors say yes, but the politicians say no, you have to wonder about your health. Who do you trust? The money behind the politicians, or the doctors who are sworn to do no harm?

The Feds are overreaching. As activists, we can expect our a great wave of success after the public backlash for their mistaken efforts. We appreciate them helping us fast track to legalization. In the meantime, hunker down and remember that nothing could be as bad as Nixon and he’s long since buried. Good riddance.

By Anthony York, Los Angeles Times
October 15, 2011, 6:01 p.m.
Reporting from Sacramento— The state’s largest doctor group is calling for legalization of marijuana, even as it pronounces cannabis to be of questionable medical value.

Trustees of the California Medical Assn., which represents more than 35,000 physicians statewide, adopted the position at their annual meeting in Anaheim late Friday. It is the first major medical association in the nation to urge legalization of the drug, according to a group spokeswoman, who said the larger membership was notified Saturday.

Dr. Donald Lyman, the Sacramento physician who wrote the group’s new policy, attributed the shift to growing frustration over California’s medical marijuana law, which permits cannabis use with a doctor’s recommendation. That, he said, has created an untenable situation for physicians: deciding whether to give patients a substance that is illegal under federal law.

“It’s an uncomfortable position for doctors,” he said. “It is an open question whether cannabis is useful or not. That question can only be answered once it is legalized and more research is done. Then, and only then, can we know what it is useful for.”

There is a battle being waged against you, me, and human development. Doctors nationwide are begging to study cannabis. They know their patients are using the plant medicinally, as a life enhancer, and yes, also recreationally. Doctors can’t study, and so ignorance prevails. Is that the best use of your tax dollars? Is the war on drugs the best use of your tax dollars? The protests in the streets of major cities around the United States, and now the world, to occupy Wall Street, occupy San Francisco and so on, are all resisting the power of money to influence our political system in ways which to not benefit you as an individual citizen. The war on drugs is a corrupting influence on our political, judicial, and human services systems. Who benefits? Not you. Not me. The time to end the drug war is yesterday.

Obama Administration Escalates War on Medical Marijuana Patients

Posted by Ty on October 7th, 2011

We don’t bleed when we don’t fight. Yet they keep bringing the fight. Why? Let it be known, we are under Federal attack. Stand up with us. Occupy Wall Street. Occupy San Francisco.

Drug Policy Alliance press release about Obama escalating the war on drugs against patients:

A series of administration actions in the past month makes it clear that they are engaged in a full scale assault on medical marijuana patients’ rights and their ability to access medicine and that they have reconsidered their willingness to allow states with medical marijuana laws to implement those policies without federal interference. The Treasury Dept. is forcing banks in Colorado to close accounts of medical marijuana businesses operating legally under state law. The IRS now says it will not recognize legitimate business expenses of dispensaries and is requiring owners to pay taxes required of no other businesses; the result will be closure of the most well regulated dispensaries and loss of millions of dollars in tax revenue for local governments. And the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives last week ruled that state-sanctioned medical marijuana patients cannot legally possess firearms.

“The Obama administration’s latest moves strongly suggest that their medical marijuana policies are now being driven by over-zealous prosecutors and the anti-marijuana ideologues who dominated policymaking in past administrations,” said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Barack Obama is betraying promises made when he ran for president and turning his back on the sensible policies announced during his first year in office. Instead of encouraging state and local authorities to regulate medical marijuana distribution in the interests of public safety and health, his administration seems determined to re-criminalize as much as possible. It all adds up to bad policy, bad politics and bad faith.”

IRS Ruling Strikes Fear In Medical Marijuana Industry

Posted by Ty on October 5th, 2011

I want to be very clear with you, Dear Reader. You won’t read cannabis news like this every day. This story is HUGE and we must all come together to fight against it. Dispensaries are already closing because of this IRS ruling.

In a potentially crushing blow to the burgeoning medical marijuana industry, the IRS has ruled that dispensaries cannot deduct standard business expenses such as payroll, security or rent.
Harborside Health Center, one of the nation’s largest medical marijuana dispensaries and considered a model for the industry, is on the hook for $2.5 million in taxes from 2007 and 2008. That is $2 million more than the Oakland, Calif.-based company paid for those tax years.
“I see only two outcomes here,” said Steve DeAngelo, director and chief executive of Harborside. “Either this IRS assessment has to change or we go out of business. There really isn’t a middle ground for us.”
DeAngelo says the ruling will likely be appealed. He has 90 days to respond to the ruling.

Dear Reader, that is the leader of the biggest dispensary in the US talking. If Harborside goes down, who else can defeat the IRS? We must stand together with Harborside. Put pressure your political leaders today!!!! Patients must be allowed safe access to their medicine, as the voters set into law with the passage of Prop 215 in California. Who is the federal government to say otherwise when they provide medical marijuana to a group of patients each month. Check out the story of federal marijuana patients like Irv Rosenfeld here.

Fearless – The Jeb Corliss Story

Jeb Corliss is a fascinating human being. This man was born to be an outlier, a unique human being in his action. He was born to be uncomfortable in the middle. Enjoy this videos that make up the story of Jeb’s life. His only limitations are the laws of physics and his imagination. That allows for quite a lot. Take a look.

I’m not sure what these guys take for pain when they inevitably get injured, but medical marijuana might do wonders. Blueberry strains work particularly well because of the unique interaction

Leaf introduces Dr. William Courtney and Kristen Peskuski of Cannabis International. In this video you will hear about the medicinal effects of juicing (and not heating!) raw cannabis sativa plants. Has this worked for you? How do the results compare to those achieved by Shona Banda and others who have tried the Rick Simpson cannabis oil (heated) method? Please write to us and let us know what you experience and what you learn in your own research into the matter of the health benefits of marijuana oil and juicing the whole cannabis plant material. We are all community. We are all learning together.

We are also interested in the success Kristen is achieving by using cannabis during her pregnancies. Expectant mothers are naturally worried about the effects of marijuana on their unborn babies. We share their concerns and hope to learn as much about ganja use by pregnant women. Cannabis International will be leading the way in all of these matters and more. Stay tuned. Viva Sativa!

DOJ: State Workers Can Legally Run Med Marijuana Programs

Posted by Ty on August 9th, 2011

If you are confused, you are not alone. Now the Federal Government says state medical marijuana workers are A-okay. (cause that’s not what they said last month…) Well, okay with us then. Carry on. (we were anyway…)

The U.S. Department of Justice on Monday filed a legal brief indicating the federal government would not prosecute state employees for implementing state medical marijuana programs, according to the Marijuana Policy Project.

I suppose we can expect a few more shots across the bow before we legalize in California in 2012, but for today at least, we can rest and smoke in peace. Viva Sativa! Raise your J to all our brothers and sisters caught up in the legal system today. One day I hope we’ll all laugh about how ridiculous this drug war thing this was. Until then, Nixon can suck it. Man, I really hope I can laugh anyway…

Top 10 Marijuana Myths

Posted by Ty on June 16th, 2011

The Top 10 Myths about Marijuana:

  • Stoned drivers suck.
Not really. We may be somewhat paranoid, but we tend to focus intently on the task of driving and arrive home safely as a result. We recommend not driving while you smoke. Wait until you are no longer potentially impaired. How long is that? You’ll know. Not long. Just be honest with yourself and be safe.

  • Marijuana makes you hungry.
Ok, yes, most of the time. But many specific strains are potent enough to drive focus towards tasks and thoughts other than eating. The best cannabis has even been known to Suppress the appetites of whole groups of talkative patients! One’s experience will always depend on the strain of marijuana smoked, time of day, and mood. The concept of set and setting are important to cannabis patients. The mindset of the patient and the environment in which the cannabis is used will always play a part in the end result experience. If you think you’ll get the munchies, you will. If you don’t, maybe you’ll forget about food altogether and express your energy through art or writing or dance. How will you choose to expend your energy?

  • Stoned people are lazy.
Uh, no. For many people, cannabis can direct their focus and allow for creative, productive days filled with good quality work, all the while offering a sense of overall physical and emotional well being. A little attention paid to which strains of marijuana result in focus rather than apathy will go a long way in determining the path of your day. Neither GreenHitShirts.com nor StickyGuide.com were created by lazy people. What will you do when your life is enhanced with cannabis?

  • Pot today is stronger than in the 1960′s.
Let’s face it, most black market mid-grade cannabis has been the same since lids were handed out by dudes with tinted glasses listening to Fleetwood Mac. Top grade medicinal cannabis sold in dispensaries in California and Colorado can be much stronger than your daddy’s pot, but in the medicinal case you know exactly what you are getting. Sometimes the THC percentage for flowers can top 20%. Smart ganja users just titrate by smoking less, getting the same “high”, saving money, reducing energy consumption, reducing harm to their bodies, and smiling much, much more. Concentrated cannabis such as hash, kief, ganeesh crystals, koil, hash oil, and silly puddy is produced so that patients may use only a small amount of the medicine while attaining maximum physical benefit. Smart!

  • Smoking marijuana will give you lung cancer.
Dr. Donald Tashkin studied this subject and found the opposite to be true. Smoking marijuana can actually protect one’s lungs in the case of simultaneous tobacco smoking.

  • Smoking dope kills sperm and destroys sex drive.
Scary, right? The truth is that in studies of human beings the scientific community continually fails to prove that marijuana harms our ability to reproduce. Smoking a joint would in fact be terrible birth control. As for sex drive, some people report an increase in sexual drive from heavy use of cannabis, while others feel a decrease in libido. Plenty of babies are born healthy into the cannabis community, so, umm, keep your hats on, gentlemen.

  • Smoking chronic makes you forgetful.
If we step into the mind of a person influenced by cannabis, we see that the mind races and joyfully springs forth new ideas constantly. If the marijuana smoker tries to speak, inevitably the tongue will trip on the fast flowing river of ideas. Going upstream to retrieve an old idea, even from only a moment ago, can seem difficult because new ideas are flowing all the time. The hiccup can often be resolved and the memory can be retrieved moments later, but that single lapse is often misperceived by non-cannabis users as evidence of brain inactivity. In fact, quite the opposite. We are actually having too many thoughts to speak clearly. Advanced cannabis users get over this problem pretty quickly and can speak and work with ease, even while smoking a joint.

  • Using cannabis makes you artistic and creative.
No, art and creativity are within you all the time. Cannabis can help you realize your full potential by revealing your complete self to you. Eventually, you won’t need the shortcut to unlock the creativity and art from within you. For some, marijuana can become a handicap, perhaps even dulling their ability to reach their full potential. We recommend using just enough, but not too much, if any at all.

  • Most Americans get their weed from Mexico.
Nope. Homegrown rules the game. Sure, we’ve all seen plenty bags of Mexican brick weed full of sticks, stems, seeds, and Goodness knows what else. Americans smoke that schwag because they have no other choice. Even the worst homegrown cannabis is far superior to any outdoor marijuana I’ve seen from Mexico. With just a little skill and some tender love and care, Americans can easily grow all the marijuana we will ever need. Mexican dope is only here because of prohibition, and it speaks to the size of the American market as citizens yearn for a safer alternative to alcohol and tobacco. Buy American to make Mexico safe again. Prohibition creates violence. A regulated marijuana market for responsible adults would eliminate drug violence related to marijuana.

  • Marijuana is a scary, dangerous drug.
First of all, nobody has ever died from a ganja overdose. Never. People around the world overdose on aspirin each day. Aspirin. Yet nobody dies from pot. Is marijuana completely safe? For most people, Yes. Some people with a propensity towards schizophrenia may exacerbate that tendency by smoking marijuana, especially when the patient is under age 18. Most other people find cannabis to be a mild consciousness altering drug which is to be respected and used sparingly. Some people are able to utilize cannabis daily as an herbal therapy and still function in society by holding down jobs, paying taxes, and even raising children. For such patients, marijuana is seldom, if ever, a party drug. For them, marijuana helps with muscle relaxation, for example, which allows them to work and be productive, happy citizens. Most people use cannabis a few times in their life and that’s it. No big deal. Some people get addicted. Know yourself, be honest with yourself, and you will be All Right in your relationship with cannabis sativa. Simple enough.

High Minded Dope quote of the day:
“It is possible to stop most drug addiction in the United States within a very short time. Simply make all drugs available and sell them at cost. Label each drug with a precise description of what effect – good or bad – the drug will have on the taker. This will require heroic honesty. Don’t say that marijuana is addictive or dangerous when it is neither, as millions of people know — unlike “speed,” which kills most unpleasantly, or heroin, which can be addictive and difficult to kick. Along with exhortation and warning, it might be good for our citizens to recall (or learn for the first time) that the United States was the creation of men who believed that each person has the right to do what he wants with his own life as long as he does not interfere with his neighbors’ pursuit of happiness (that his neighbor’s idea of happiness is persecuting others does confuse matters a bit).”

Dr. Frankel is filling a void created by the fear of arrest for doctors who speak about cannabis with their patients. Doing the Right thing can be so very lonely.
